Never Love
As Julia Michaels has said “Love is weird” and for me this track presents a less explored perspective within a relationship. It isn’t that of the spurned lover wanting revenge or a lament about love lost. To be honest at this point I haven’t entirely decided exactly what I see is happening within this track but it is definitely in a less explored territory.
(Verse 1)
“I don't wanna say how I feel but
I'm getting close
Wise words never left my lips so
I keep them closed
(Pre-Chorus)
I blew a kiss at the end of the night
Said you'd miss me when I waved goodbye I
Never lie but I bite my tongue
With you all the time
(Chorus)
Oh it's stupid
Oh it was never love
Oh it's stupid
We're better off loved and lost
But it was never love
Oh but it was never love
Oh but it was never love
Oh it was never lovе
(Verse 2)
I don't mean to go hurting hearts but
We'rе getting there
Scared me off with three short words oh
How dare you
(Pre-Chorus)
We pillow talk at the end of the night
You say nothing ever felt this right I
Never lie but I bite my tongue
With you all the time
(Chorus)
Oh it's stupid (oh my god)
Gave it my best shot (oh my god)
They say it's better to be loved and lost
But it was never love
Oh, it was never love
But it was never love (it was never love)
Oh, it was never love
Oh it's stupid
Better to be loved and lost
But it was never love
Oh, it was never love”
So as I stated I haven’t made up my mind about this track yet. I haven’t had much time to let it percolate. Here is the image it conjures up for me currently and why. “Never lie but I bite my tongue, With you all the time.” This could mean a whole myriad of different things but my mind takes it a certain way because of the opening line: “I don't wanna say how I feel but, I'm getting close.” You combine those parts with the ending of the second verse “Scared me off with three short words oh” and my mind has creative this narrative where the subject of the track is in a relationship where they aren’t quite ready to express what they are feeling or don’t know how to because they know the words will hurt. They were scared when they were told those three words which I am inferring to be “I love you” because they were unable to say them back or that didn’t feel the same. Is it that they are unintentionally leading this person along as they try to find a way to let them down easy or could they simply be struggling with the way to express their own feelings? Perhaps they just aren’t quite at the love stage yet. As I said at the beginning, love is weird and relationships are never without some complications. Past experiences and trauma can make it more laborious to discern what you are feeling within a relationship much less actually express those feelings. So my specific narrative that I always feel a need to conjure up and flesh out aside what the essence of this track is to me is this. Sometimes in a relationship you may be the one that just isn’t feeling it or doesn’t know exactly how to express yourself etc. You just have to keep going and trying both when it comes to love and relationships but also just when it comes to existing as a human being. Ultimately you’ve got to be true to yourself and I know it sounds cliché but I believe it, nobody is better off trying to be someone they are not regardless of the reasoning.
My perspective on this track is likely to change as I continue to listen but what won’t change is the fact that these are meticulously crafted lyrics that are part of a truly exceptional piece of music.
